This is a twice a week feature (Wednesdays and Fridays) where Christa of Hooked on Books and myself will be watching and discussing all of the reboot of Doctor Who. Posts will contain spoilers for that episode and ones before it, so you may want to watch the episode before reading. I hope you’ll join us in enjoying this fantastic show, and don’t forget to check out Christa’s post (with past posts over here) as well! Allons-y!
The Lazarus Experiment by Stephen Greenhorn
Martha’s trip has come to an end, but just as the Doctor is about to depart they see a scientist on television who claims he will change what it means to be human…
Doctor Who really likes its Frankenstein parallels, doesn’t it? Or maybe scientists are just crazy obsessed with death and avoiding it or reversing it. I get the feeling that the Doctor’s black tie outfit is really just for whenever a Frankenstein like character tries to cheat death and screws up majorly. In fact, I shall now refer to it as his Frankenstein suit.
The best thing about this episode is that Martha starts to come into her own, slightly. The Doctor is her plus one. She is able to use the sonic screwdriver to save everyone. She’s the one that takes the initiative to distract Lazarus. At one point, she realizes that the Doctor very well could fail, and she may die. Instead of panicking, she tries to guarantee that at least her sister will make it out.
I’m starting to feel like there’s something missing from Ten’s Doctor. I don’t know if it’s because Rose is gone, but it seriously feels like the Doctor is barely there. He smiles and he says intelligent things, but his eyes are always so old and so empty. Maybe I’m imagining things. Or maybe David Tennant is just that good of an actor.
“You’re a joke, Lazarus! A footnote on the history of failure!” – the Doctor (OHHH BURN!)
“There’s no such things as an ordinary human.” – the Doctor
“I’m old enough to know that a longer life isn’t always a better one. In the end, you just get tired; tired of the struggle, tired of losing everyone that matters to you, tired of watching everything turn to dust.” – the Doctor
- I don’t think the TARDIS let the Doctor leave Martha, like it wouldn’t let the Doctor leave Rose in 1×1
- Saxon funded Lazarus’s experiment
- the Doctor is so bad with mothers
- both scientists running the machine are women…and then they need the Doctor’s help
- Lazarus is such an asshole; why would Tish like him even if he was younger!
- the Doctor is being a hypocrite again…surprising
- he was at the Blitz with Rose ;A;
- how the hell do the girls run in those heels
