I’m playing catch-up because I missed last week’s post. Don’t worry, Friday will bring another DW Watch-a-Thon post!
This is a weekly feature where Christa of Hooked on Books and myself will be watching and discussing all of the reboot of Doctor Who. Posts will contain spoilers for that episode and ones before it, so you may want to watch the episode before reading. I hope you’ll join us in enjoying this fantastic show, and don’t forget to check out Christa’s post as well! Allons-y!
The Long Game by Russell T. Davies
The Doctor takes Rose and her new boy toy Adam to visit the Fourth Great and Bountiful Human Empire. Except it’s not so great or bountiful. Something is wrong and it’s up to the Doctor and Rose to figure out what!
The themes in this episode are to die for. The unknowing slave. The brainwashing ability of the media. The mirage of individuality. The strength of an idea. This episode reflects so many issues that the post-9/11 world, or any war time era, faces. The media has so much influence on us and we don’t even realize it. How often do we base our opinions off of information we receive from the media? Basically, all of the time. Unless you witness something yourself or know someone who did, you’re getting your information from some sort of media source. How easily are we manipulated? Is it manipulation if we don’t realize we’re being manipulated? And how can knowledge break the cycle? If there was nothing else in this episode, I would love it just for that.
There were also a lot of small things I enjoyed about this episode. The Doctor playing wingman to Rose. The Face of Boe being pregnant as shown on the Bad Wolf channel. The Doctor/Rose hand-holding. How the Doctor ALWAYS talks himself out of trouble. Simon Pegg as the Editor. The fact that Adam is such a Slytherclaw…
But it’s the ending that really gets me knowing what will be coming later. The Doctor doesn’t “tidy up” because he never tidies up and for once that’s going to bite him the butt.
Doctor: You should go back downstairs.
(can’t decide what I love more: protective!Doctor or standing up to him!Rose)
“Is a slave a slave when he doesn’t know he’s a slave?” – the Editor
death toll: 3
random fandom connections: When Adam says he’s from the University of Mars, was I the only one who immediately thought PIGFARTS!!!!
things I wish got more screen time: The Freedom Fifteen sound like they would be really cool. May need to find some fanfiction about them.
OOC moment: The Doctor calling the watchamacallit a “Thing.” He’s usually so understanding of the aliens, so the fact that he has such an immediate and negative reaction and doesn’t try to talk with it really confused me.
