Doctor Who Watch-a-Thon 2×4

This is a twice a week feature (Wednesdays and Fridays) where Christa of Hooked on Books and myself will be watching and discussing all of the reboot of Doctor Who. Posts will contain spoilers for that episode and ones before it, so you may want to watch the episode before reading. I hope you’ll join us in enjoying this fantastic show, and don’t forget to check out Christa’s post as well! Allons-y!

School Reunion by Toby Whithouse

When Mickey notices something strange, he calls the Doctor and Rose to check out a school that recently got a revamp in teachers and dining habits. But Mickey isn’t the only Smith watching the sky and the news. Sarah Jane is on the case! Now the Doctor (and Rose) must come face to face with the past he spends so much time running from.

This week in RTD tries to destroy Meghan’s ovaries: David Tennant as a teacher. Someone has been reading my fantasy diary. But seriously, as a future teacher if suddenly David Tennant!Doctor was in my break room because he was now teaching freaking physics, I’d promise to teach him some French, starting with « Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ? »

This is my third or fourth time watching this episode, and I still really love it for one big reason: Sarah Jane Smith. I think she’s as much a defender of the Earth without the Doctor as she was with him. Now, I haven’t watched any Classic Who with her in it, but RTD made it so that you don’t NEED to have a Classic Who background to enjoy Sarah Jane and the emotions she’s going through or the emotions the Doctor is going through seeing her again. The acting in this episode is so fantastic (except maybe the typing by those kids–seriously kids, you can actually press the buttons and use more than the middle row) that you never once doubt the emotions the characters are experiencing.

Then there’s the parallel to the Rose/Doctor story which is just so beautiful and heartbreaking because you can see that the Doctor is this~ freaking~ close~ to admitting that he loves~ her, but then he doesn’t because he SUCKS. Look, the Doctor agrees with me.

The one element I have a big issue with in this episode is how Rose and Sarah Jane first react to meeting each other. Okay, I understand the jealousy thing, but really? REALLY? These are two incredible women and there first reaction is to get all catty with each other and make underhand (although fairly humorous) remarks at each other? No. I am not okay with this.

  • Rose: Do I stay with him?
  • Sarah Jane: Yes, some thing are worth getting your heart broken for.

  1. I LOVED THIS EPISODE. I was just so… moved. And the hilarity and yes, the parallels. God, show, WHY are you so good?!

  2. Samantha says:

I love this episode so much. For absolutely everything in it. I have no issues with this one. Plus, I’m a huge fan of Sarah-Jane Smith. (She’s my favourite Classic Who companion.) And I love Anthony Head as the evil principal XDDD
