[review] Anna Dressed in Blood by Kendare Blake

For Cas Loswood, ghosts aren’t just a part of stories you tell around a campire, they’re his life. After his father was killed by a murderous ghost, it fell to Cas to continue his father’s legacy as a ghost killer. When one of his informants lets him know about the ghost known as Anna Dressed in Blood he was expecting an easy kill, but what he finds is more terrifying and more fantastic than that.

Anna Dressed in Blood (Anna, #1)You don’t get much more star crossed than Cas and Anna. I don’t think I’ll be able to look at pairings the same way again. Oh, you think your otp has it rough? At least both of them are ALIVE. I didn’t find Cas on his own very interesting. He’s very much obsessed with what he sees as his one true calling, and when a character is that focused on something it tends to wipe out all other personality. Anna, on the other hand, is fantastic. She is a great mix of power and vulnerability, terrifying and terrified.

The plot itself is quite well done. I say plot, but I feel as if it should be plural. There are multiple storylines running concurrently. Somehow, Blake manages to weave them all together into something that is not only coherent, but exciting and interesting. Bonus points given for having the story set in Canada. Woo Canada!

One thing I was worried about was the horror aspect. I am not a fan of horror or ghosts or blood, and the cover shows you that this book obviously contains all three of these things. I’ll admit there were some moments that had my brain pulsing in terror. I made the mistake of reading this at night before bed, and when I turned the last page I couldn’t bring myself to turn out the light. I am twenty-two years old. Granted, I am a total scaredy cat, but still. I slept with the lights on after reading this. If that’s not the sign of a good ghost story I don’t know what is.

The sequel, Girl of Nightmares, comes out August 7th, so there’s still time for you to read Anna Dressed in Blood before then. Be sure to check it out if you’re looking for something a little different in the supernatural romance genre or simply looking for a good scare.

Don’t just take my word for it!

“Anna is like no other character I’ve ever read before.” – Reut @ Reut Reads

“Good amounts of creepy, gross, and freaky with good, believable characters and a legitimately shiver-inducing baddy.” – Amy @ Tripping Over Books

  1. I really love the idea of a well written ghost. It’s just not something you see often enough.

  2. reutreads says:

Ah, I loved Anna. And Cas! He’s a bit of a cocky teenage boy and I am such a sucker for those, esp. when they fall in love with ideas and not people 🙂 Thanks for the link!

  3. Anna Dressed In Blood sounds really cool plus my coblogger really loved it, so I guess I will have to read it.

Also, I like the way you describe Anna’s character. 🙂
